Everyone wants to be stronger. Most people want to lose weight as well. Pilates does both, but there are other benefits to this type of exercise that help bring a more holistic and balanced approach to health and wellness. If you have plateaued in your current exercise plan or simply need a change, Pilates is a great option to explore.

Body awareness

Many of us don’t pay any attention to our posture when we sit, stand, or lie down. Pilates helps the individual hone in on all the muscles in the body, paying special attention to keeping shoulders down, pulling in the stomach, and keeping your back straight. This body awareness will change the way you move about in life, effectively saving you the typical aches and pains that come along with poor posture.

Stronger core

The muscles that surround your midsection affect your entire body. When you strengthen your abdominals, you help all the muscles that your support your back as well. When you aren’t in class, you can help the toning of your stomach by getting a product like the Ab belt, a belt that provides electrical stimulation to your muscles while you do other things like clean or watch television. This Ab belt report explains the benefits more in detail.

Body symmetry

Similar to body awareness, body symmetry is the art of allowing your body to remain balanced on both sides, working in harmony together. Pilates gives you the tools to identify the source of your body aches and how to heal them. Oftentimes a person, who has soreness in their arms, doesn’t realize that it is the neck that needs strengthening. Pilates highlights the interconnectedness of the entire structure of the body.

Meditation

While not as meditative as yoga, Pilates does use eastern meditative techniques interwoven with the exercises. The most common form is with the use of breath. Every exercise comes with a breathing pattern that helps focus the mind on the exercise and the muscle group that is working. Like yoga and Tai Chi, Pilates is about strengthening the mind, body, and soul.

If you aren’t sure what exercise regimen will work for you, Pilates is an excellent choice for all different body types. It isn’t as hard on the joints as high-impact aerobics, but it does have a strong strengthening component that is a bit more intense than yoga.

Home workouts, local gym workouts, are they the same? The short answer is yes. The long answer is ‘yes, if you’re motivated enough and know what you’re doing’. And why wouldn’t you?

Information is accessible to everyone these days, providing you’ve got an internet connection. Even then all you need is your local library, or find yourself an internet cafe. Working out has never been easier and whether or not you’re pounding the streets, working out down in your basement or pumping it up down at your local gym, what matters is the fact that you’re doing something.

America You’re Too Fat

As a nation, America possesses one of the highest ratios of overweight and obese people per capita. Unfortunately for us, we’re far too busy looking inward to realize just how the rest of the world views us.

We’re renowned for our love of food. Fat, sugar laden food. Large portions, regular cook-outs and family barbecues. Whilst we’re also known for the body beautiful, much of the rest of the world knows that much of that is confined to the rich and the famous, rather than the ordinary folks among us.

The way to tackle it? Get off our butts and start shaking that weight from our hips.

Fortunately, society makes it easy for us. Local gyms, dance and fitness classes, all are readily accessible in communities everywhere. There are also lots of free activities that we can take advantage of such as:

hiking

walking

do walking

running

mountain biking

swimming

There’s also the fact that the average American home is spacious and well thought out, meaning that most of us have a basement, a spare room or a garage that we can use as a home gym. Between things such as local advertisements for used products, and online discount offers (such as those on this site: bowflex coupons), there’s a myriad of different ways in which you can acquire home gym equipment.

And the important factor? That you actually get up and get pout there. What do you want? Fat and unfit? Or fit and healthy? We think the choice is an easy one.

As a life long fitness addict, imagine my surprise recently when I went to get changed (after one of my Pilates classes) and I found a beautiful princess cut engagement ring in my locker, along with a note that simply said ‘marry me’.

It turned out that everyone was in on it (the owners, our Pilates instructor, family, friends and the guys in my class) except me, and to say I was shocked is an understatement. Of course I said yes … my ‘intended’ stepped from behind the row of lockers, with a big rose bouquet in his arms as well as a look of sheer panic!

It turned out that the connection between the proposal and my exercise class was to do with my commitment to Pilates! Apparently I’m devout when it comes to exercise and my (now) fiance wanted to inject some humor into his proposal. Needless to say it was emotional, shocking, and funny, and I wouldn’t have changed the way it happened for the world.

And why am I so addicted to Pilates? The simple answer is that I’m a frustrated ballet dancer. I danced throughout my childhood, and always wanted to go on to do it professionally. Unfortunately a car accident put paid to my dreams back when I was 15. I shattered my pelvis and broke my right femur, and it was felt that, once I’d recovered, I’d never be strong enough to cope with the rigors that come with ballet.

I’d had pins inserted into both my pelvis and femur, so I was well aware of how badly damaged I’d been. At the time I took it pretty hard but eventually time healed my frustration. I had to ‘keep going’ anyway, and although I was initially restricted to swimming and then static bikes (I had to do non-weight bearing exercise for a long while) I slowly healed enough to take up Pilates.

In case you don’t know, Pilates is based upon ballet movements, and different workouts have been devised according to the different levels of fitness and abilities that people possess. Luckily for me I was pretty supple to start with and even though I’d stiffened up a bit I soon found my mojo once again. Pilates has been, for me, a bit of a lifesaver.

In and among the many benefits of this form of exercise are those that relate to the spine and pelvis. Pilates lengthens and stretches, tones and builds and the spine and pelvis need to be aligned in order to perform the exercises correctly. Having (pretty much) shattered my pelvis Pilates helped me to rebuild the maximum amount of strength that I can.

I think the above pretty much nails why I remain utterly devoted towards Pilates, and why I always will be. I feel such a sense of well-being, and have little to no trouble with my broken bones for years. I also feel great, and look it, and even though I’ve put a few pounds on since my teens, I remain extremely toned and supple. I also (now) totally get why I found my gorgeous engagement ring in my locker and I’m even trying to persuade my fiancé that perhaps a spa retreat will be the best honeymoon destination for us both

If you’ve been practicing yoga for awhile and feel that you’re a bit jaded or your routine just feels old, then sometimes trying a new style of yoga can breathe life back into your yoga practice. Aerial yoga is one of the newest forms of yoga. Yoga students who have been intimidated by inversion poses, will love the way the yoga swing or hammock helps you with these. But I get ahead of myself.

Aerial yoga is a form of yoga that uses a hammock or swing as a prop. Sometimes the class is mainly on the yoga mat and the swing is used to stretch out your back and help you maintain poses. In other aerial yoga classes most of the class is spent suspended. You might feel like a star in Cirque de Soleil! Most classes are somewhere in the middle.

You really do need to go to a yoga studio or fitness gym to try it out. First for safety. It’s always good to have a trained professional when you decide to go flying. Secondly, you’ll need a yoga swing or hammock suspended from your ceiling. Most of us wouldn’t want to make that kind of home decor commitment until we’ve decided that we really like that form of exercise.

As with most forms of yoga, there are different forms of aerial yoga that you can take. As this yoga has found an audience various yoga teachers have developed routines and equipment for it. Click Here to see a great discussion of three popular forms of aerial yoga – Unnata, Anti-gravity, or FlyGym.

Unnata yoga was developed by Michelle Dortignac, who comes from a traditional yoga background. She has classes that are based mostly on the yoga mat and just use the yoga swing as a way to stretch effectively. But she also has master classes where most of the class is done in the air.

On the other end of the spectrum you’ll find Christopher Harrison who was a world-class gymnast before practicing yoga. Harrison found yoga to help heal injuries that developed from his gymnastics and dance.

It’s really best to call they aerial yoga class ahead and see what level of fitness and experience that they expect in from their aerial yoga students. But I think if you can find a beginner class, it’s a great way to bring your yoga practice to new heights.

Due to the fact that I’m into rock climbing, I invest a lot of time and effort into my personal fitness. Having been a climber for a long while, I learned way back that climbing requires you to be both mentally and physically fit, otherwise you ain’t climbing no rocks, no how. In short, before you even consider rock climbing as your sport of choice, you need to be aware of just how fit you need to be before you start.

Many people (I’m talking about newcomers to the sport) are often surprised to find out that climbing does require a more than average level of fitness, more so because most climbs also require that you hike into the climbing route. In my case I was always pretty fit before I started but many folks are anything but and one of the forms of exercise that I advise newcomers to take up is aerobics.

Aerobic exercise provides both cardio-vascular exercise and the ability to strengthen and tone muscle. For climbing, the body needs to be able to flex and stretch, as well as possess a good level of core strength. Aerobics provides that, and more. I take a couple of classes a week (I also climb and run every other day) and will continue to do so for as long as I’m able to climb.

Another reason I like to recommend aerobics as a core form of exercise is because the cardio-vascular aspect also matches the same in rock climbing. Believe it or not that activity derived from climbing increases the heart rate and, from a health perspective, it goes without saying that having a healthy heart can only ever be a good thing.

Besides having a fit and healthy body, what else do you need to take up rock climbing? For one you need the correct training, and wherever you are in the country, there will be a climbing center somewhere nearby. A good place to start is by way of this site: rock climbing USA. You can easily search for a school in your state, town or city, plus the site’s full of other climbing related information.

You also need the right equipment – harness, ropes, helmet, ropes, shoes and more, and where to get it from. I use a site that A) details the different types of climbing gear, B) offers info about the top brands and C) redirects you to money-off deals at the various retailers, try it out: the clymb free shipping. Ok so now you’ve got the low-down – to start rock climbing you need:

to be fit and ready

to have the right mental attitude

to learn the basic techniques

to learn all about personal safety

to own the correct climbing equipment

Now you’ve got the bare bones knowledge, you can make a start. Check in with a local climbing school, sign-up and get climbing.

It’s all too easy to make excuses for not hitting the gym or opting for fast food, and some of the reasons are legitimate. Jobs, classes and family obligations can eat away at your day, leaving you little time to spend on yourself. If you want to be the best you can be as you make it through your busy day, then eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and participating in regular physical activity is not an option.

Staying Active

A hectic schedule may prevent you from going to the gym, but that doesn’t mean you should sit around on the couch watching television. There are many household activities that will have you burning off the calories in no time. A mere 30 minutes of light housework, playing the piano or fishing will burn off between 150 and 230 calories, depending on your current weight. Up the ante by spending 30 minutes cleaning the gutters, cultivating the garden or shoveling snow, and you’ll burn off between 300 and 500 calories.

In addition to burning calories, exercising or participating in physical activity also helps your body function more efficiently and effectively, keeps your blood glucose levels more stable and gives your cardiovascular system the workout it needs to stay healthy.

Eating Right

Fast food is one of the leading causes of obesity, which can lead to diabetes and a number of other health issues. Unfortunately, it is too often a part of the diet for families with crazy schedules. To stay healthy, you should be eating a healthy, well-balanced diet that is filled with fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, lean meats, seafood and whole grains, although that is often easier said than done.

Put aside some time on the weekends to start prepping your meals for the week. You can chop vegetables, marinate your meats and even premake some of the fresh items to serve your family. Instead of skipping a meal or heading for the golden arches when your schedule is very tight, consider keeping a stash of meal replacement bars or shakes on hand. Choose a brand that is low-calorie and filled with a meal’s worth of nutrition, such as Medifast. If the cost seems prohibitive, you can do an online search for Medifast coupons, which is sure to turn up some good discounts towards your next purchase.

Due to our busy lifestyles, people rarely find time to think about themselves and their health. Fortunately, there is no need to go to the gym to exercise as you can do it in the comfort of your home. Home treadmills have become quite popular in last few years, and they offer numerous benefits to their users:

Zumba is one of the most popular workout classes across the country. You can find a Zumba class at a local gym in just about every city nowadays. If you are want to give this dance workout a try, here are some tips when it comes to dressing for your class.

The first thing you should address is the shoes you are going to wear for the workout. The best shoes for Zumba are ones that have a thin tread on the bottom and are lightweight. You wouldn’t want to wear a running shoe for a Zumba class because the tread on running shoes are generally thicker than a fitness or general aerobic shoe. Make sure that your shoes fit properly and they support you well. Lastly, make sure you wear comfortable socks that aren’t too heavy and won’t irritate your feet or ankles.

Zumba is not only a great workout but it also promotes feeling good about your body and not being afraid to show it off a little. With that being said, avoid wearing big baggy t-shirts and heavy sweatpants to a Zumba class. Instead look for more fitted clothes such as yoga pants or even a cute workout skirt. A fitted or close fit t-shirt works well as anything heavier may cause you to get way too hot and anything bulky could inhibit some of the dance moves. You don’t have to show a lot of skin, but you also shouldn’t be doing your Zumba workout in pajamas.

To give you a better idea of what a Zumba class looks like and what you should wear to your first workout, check out the video below.

Many dancers make the mistake of thinking that all they need do, to reach their full potential, is to take dance classes.

Wrong.

OK, so you can reach a reasonable level of competency in whichever dance genre you choose that way. But if you want to excel, you need to do more. Whether you’re learning flamenco dance, belly dance or ballroom, science has moved on since the basics of dance instruction were developed – and Pilates is a good example of that. Belly dance drills, for instance, just aren’t quite enough to build the power you need to amaze your audience.

All dancers want a long, slender look but must also have a lot of strength. Weight training can deliver the power but at the expense of that slimline look. Yoga can give a lean outline but not the power. Pilates can develop the strong muscles so necessary to a dancer, without any hint of bulking up. It’s also a great solution if you’re injured, because most of the exercises lend themselves to being adaptable. It’s relatively easy to work around an injured muscle or limb, especially if you’re working on the reformer bed. That’s important for a dancer, who can’t afford to lose condition or go backwards.

So next time you’re doing your belly dance drills, ask yourself whether you might be able to fit in an extra conditioning session – and make it Pilates!

There are so many benefits to being healthy that there is simply no excuse why you should not work towards getting fit. One of the most well known methods of getting a fitter lifestyle is by using getting the right amount of exercise incorporated in your daily routine.

There are many ways that you can engage in exercise, but if you want to be able to get some exercise in the comfort of your own home, you may want to invest in some good exercise equipment which you can use. There is a whole lot of different fitness equipment out on the market today, and it is simply a matter of personal preference as to which types you would like to purchase for your home use.
